There are two main issues with carbon steel continuous digesters – general caustic corrosion attacking the lower two thirds of the shell, and stress corrosion cracking caused by not treating weld zones post-heating.

The majority of surface issues that Carbon Steel Evaporators are faced withstart with corrosion. Evaporators can corrode in the vapor dome, ducting, tube sheets, immersion service, and heater elements. These issues are typically due to increased sulfidity, production rates, and temperatures affecting the passivity of the steel.
Evaporator components fabricated with 304L SS have also experienced intragranular corrosion and stress corrosion-cracking as the solidity rates of evaporator operations increase.

Waste Heat Recovery (WHR)
Waste heat recovery is a very large category in terms of design because of end-use differences. Examples include cement plants, sulfur recovery units, amine reboiler units, and hydrogen plants. Most fireside issues are however, relatively simple to classify. They are the result of going below the dew point of an aggressive gas or under deposit corrosion due to an entrapped aggressive species. There are also instances of erosion due to particulates traveling in the exhaust gases.
